The Scimitar-horned Oryx is white with a chestnut neck and chest and long, graceful, curved horns that can exceed 40 inches in length. Horns are present on both males and females. A large and beautiful animal that once inhabited almost the entire North African continent, they are able to survive in extreme heat and are able to go for weeks without water. Although now extinct in the wild they have thrived on a number of hunting ranches in Texas and may be legally hunted year round at Buck Valley Ranch. In addition to Scimitar-horned Oryx we also have other animals that you can hunt year round as well as those only available in the fall.

In addition to an awesome trophy, our Scimitar-horned Oryx trophy is proudly displayed above the fireplace, they also supply a large quantity of truly excellent meat. Adult males weigh from 300 pounds to more than 400 pounds with females weighing somewhat less. The males and females are almost indistinguishable on the range with females tending to have longer horns and males tending to have more horn mass.

Hunting these animals has been somewhat controversial because of their listing as an endangered species. The Scimitar-horned Oryx has clearly demonstrated unconventional truth that by allowing these animals to be hunted the species will be saved. Texas ranchers have gone to great lengths to preserve and propagate these animals because there is a strong economic incentive. If these animals could not be bred, raised, sold and hunted for profit the thousands of animals on Texas hunting ranches would quickly disappear leaving only a few animals in zoos around the world.
